Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the responsibilities in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: These are sub-committees formed to facilitate decision-making, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc

History of Grama Panchayat

The place name Konniyur, or present-day Konni, is derived from the Tamil word 'Kon-ti-ur', meaning the village where the king resides.This region, which is inextricably linked to the Pandalam royal family, a descendant of the Chembazhannoor branch of the Pandya kingdom, witnessed their rule for over a century and the construction of various koikkals (palaces). Places like Mallassery (wrestling), Vazhamuttam (swordplay), Lakkur (archery), where soldiers were trained in martial arts, and the Muringamangalam Mahadevar Temple, established by the Shaivite kings, testify to the historical importance of Konni.
